Next for Theatre Now!
Long John Silver may be a dastardly villain, but he’s reckoned without the Ladies of the Smuggler’s Cove Women’s Institute! This is Ben Crockers’s largest cast pantomime and a madcap, laugh a minute pirate adventure story from start to finish!
Perfect for the entire family, Theatre Now! is bringing this adaptation of the beloved “Treasure Island” to the Evergreen Theatre January 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27th with show times at 7 on the Fridays & Saturdays and matinees on the Sundays.
Entrance is by donation, making live theatre affordable for everyone.
Directed by veteran Theatre Now! member, Tina Thompson, there are jokes, songs and dancing and hilarity throughout.
Following the traditional British Pantomime style, there are women in men’s roles, men in women’s roles, love-crossed lovers, the comedic duo, scary creatures, live music and audience interaction.
You will recognise the familiar faces of Ted Durnin as the dame, Mike Bamford as Long John Silver, Tricia Andrews as both members of the comedic duo, Nicole Narbonne as the aging parrot, Radhika Samwald as the president of the Women’s Institute and Al Dickon on piano with a cast made up of local characters from nine to sixty-nine.
Be prepared to cheer for the goodies and boo the baddies, and general silliness will ensue.
Thanks to the Arts Council for making this possible with their grant in kind.
It's a huge job pulling this off, so if you are interested in working behind the scenes, please let us know. We want you!

Theatre Now! is a small but creative amateur theatre company at the top of the Sunshine Coast in south western BC, Canada in the city of Powell River.
Since its inception in January 1994 Theatre Now! has maintained its truly 'community theatre' focus, seeking to involve a large segment of the community in its activities, and playing in sites as varied as schools, community halls, resort hotels, the street, Belfry Theatre (Victoria), farmer's market, the Moose Hall, museum, parks and playgrounds, the seashore, malls, Evergreen Theatre, restaurants, and even once in Wal-Mart! At conferences, drama festivals, street festivals, Japanese New Year, dinner theatre, Earth Day.
Theatre Now! has enthusiastically participated in a variety of theatre genres including one, two and three act plays, improv, skits, pantomimes, puppets, murder mysteries, and theatre sports. Actors from 8 years old to 70 years old (hundreds of actors and backstage crews altogether) including people of all abilities have been welcomed. A few of the plays we did had casts of over 30. And we have done plays written by a local playwrights, Ted Durnin, Hilary Bruhn, Tricia Andrews and more; pantomimes by Vancouver writer, Ellie King, and skits by a Sechelt playwright, Betty Keller, as well as by well known playwrights Harold Pinter, Shakespeare, and Agatha Christie.
We owe our success to several factors. We have striven to maintain an inclusive philosophy and approach -- whoever wanted to join, we would find a role or a job for them. And our decision making has been by consensus. We are not a registered society and have no formal structure (we originally voted Paul Wiltse to be our President and Tina Thompson our Treasurer, only because Theatre B.C., of which we are members, requires these positions on the application form!).

Our founding members Brin Wilson, Tina Thompson, Susan Dixon, and Paul Wiltse, were vital to the company. An inspiration and strong supporter, Martin Rossander, was actor, millwright, stores clerk, inventor, musician, and all round helper in many of our activities. Walter Martella has been Music Director in several productions; Daniela D'Onofrio and Mary Tamasik choreographers.
Our plays have been directed by Susan Jersak, Paul McIsaac, Hilary Bruhn, Nicole Narbonne, Paul Wiltse, Tina Thompson, Ted Durnin, Tricia Andrews, and Alistair Edinborough.
We are open to theatre wherever we find it. We have co-hosted events with Ravens' Call Theatre, the Rock Island Players, the Townsite Heritage Society, Powell River District Library and inclusion Powell River.
